It’s easy to let the least exciting corners of your house turn into missed opportunities… But with a little creativity (and some carpentry skills), these spaces can take you by surprise, turning into something really special and unique.
In this project, we transformed a small, unfinished attic space in our client’s Kingston, RI, home into a cozy, inviting playroom for kids. But with a sloped ceiling, limited square footage, and a blank canvas, the challenge was clear: how do we make every inch count?
Here’s how we maximized the space to create a fun little kids’ hideaway.
Embracing Unique Layouts: Working With the Attic's Natural Shape
Attics come with their quirks—angled ceilings, tight corners, and sometimes, not much natural light. Instead of seeing these as limitations, we embraced them. The sloped ceiling became a defining feature, giving the room a cozy, tucked-away feel. Every nook and cranny was used intentionally, from creating a snug reading corner to setting up a playful little nook that feels like a hideaway.
We also installed a recessed light in the sloped wall, keeping the room bright without absorbing overhead space (or risking bonked heads).
By leaning into the room’s unique shape, we turned what could’ve been tricky spaces into features. The key was to see the attic as an adventure in itself—where every corner became an opportunity.
Strategic Storage: Solutions That Fit the Space
When it comes to small spaces, storage is essential. To keep the room uncluttered, we added built-in shelves along the far wall. These shelves not only store books and toys neatly but also blend right into the room’s layout, so they don’t take up valuable floor space. Wall-mounted storage and bins keep things organized while offering easy access to favorite books and toys.
The storage choices here were all about function without sacrificing form. By keeping everything tidy and accessible, the playroom feels open and ready for play.
A Playful Color Palette That Opens Up the Room
In a small space, color can work magic. We chose a light, neutral palette that makes the room feel larger and more inviting. Soft pastels and neutrals keep things airy, while subtle accents bring a touch of energy without overwhelming the eye. The colors bring brightness into the space, even on cloudy days, making it feel open, cheerful, and ready for playtime.
The right colors did more than just lighten up the room—they brought it to life, creating a happy atmosphere that’s perfect for a playroom.
We also installed luxury vinyl flooring. Fresh and airy, but also ultra-durable and clean.
The Transformation: Before & After
If you take a look at the “before” photo, it’s hard to believe it’s the same room! What was once an unfinished attic with raw floors and exposed wood is now a stylish, clean play space. And, we’re not going to lie: we had an absolute blast on this project. We think it shows!
Big Ideas for Small Spaces
If you’re inspired to transform an unused space in your home, remember: sometimes all it takes is a fresh perspective and a few smart design choices. After all, big ideas often come from the smallest spaces.
